Bert Rürup was born in Essen, Germany in 1943 and is an economist. He started his academic career by studying economics at Hamburg and Cologne universities. After that, he worked as an assistant at the finance seminar at Cologne University from 1969 to 1974 and completed his doctorate in economics in 1971.

Who is Bert Rürup?

Starting his academic career as an economist at Mannheim University in 1970, Bert Rürup later served as an economics professor at Essen University from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, he moved to Darmstadt Technical University and became a faculty member in Finance and Economic Policy. Here, he trained both undergraduate and graduate students. He also served as the university’s Deputy Rector from 1985 to 1987.

In 2000, Rürup was appointed as a member of the “Wirtschaftswise” (Economic Advisory Council) established to evaluate Germany’s economic developments. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Council in 2005 and held the position until 2009.
